Winter has Arrived in Alton!

It's been steadily getting colder here but this morning we were sure Winter had arrived in Alton when we opened our curtains and were greeted by a frosty scene.  It was so cold that we didn't want to go out so took these photos from our lounge at the front of the house.  Lazy we know but the heating was on so it was cosy inside!

If your out and about wrap up!

Autumn in Alton

I've just been out to take our dog Poppy for a walk around the village and wanted to share a few photos that I took along the way.  As you will see from the beautiful colours Autumn has arrived in Alton!

It's really lovely at the moment.  Mild dry days with nights that cool but not too chilly.  Perfect weather for tidying up in the garden!

Bus Services and Taxis - Important Information

We are located in the village of Alton in Staffordshire.
Our Bed and Breakfast, The Malthouse is just one mile from Alton Towers.
First time visitors to the area are often surprised to find that Alton and Alton Towers is in the countryside!  It's lovely here, really beautiful!

Most visitors travel to the area by car and then use their vehicle to get about while they are here.
Some guests use public transport though.
Sadly, a few days ago First Buses who operate local buses drastically reduced many services including the 32/32A that runs between Alton village and Alton Towers.
We hope that services may be re-instated in the Spring but will have to wait and see.
If you are using public transport or taxis please plan/book all your journeys (including return journeys) well in advance.  Don't forget to check the cost of fares.

If you plan to travel by bus there is a bookable bus service that operates in the local area.
Bookings must be made in advance:
8am to 5pm Monday to Thursday
8am to 4pm Friday
To book telephone 01335 342951

Taxis are of course a good option but please be aware that short journeys can be expensive.
If you are coming to stay with us and need local taxi telephone numbers please contact us.
If you are using taxis or public transport please plan/book all your journeys (including return journeys) well in advance.  Don't forget to check the cost of fares.

Bon Voyage!

Red Sky at Night Alton's Delight!

We live in a lovely place, Alton really is a beautiful part of the world.  Sometimes we are guilty of taking our surroundings for granted.  On Tuesday this week just as the sun was setting we were treated to a spectacular view and reminded just how lucky we are.

We know the saying is "Red sky at night, shepherd's delight"
but for us it was "Red sky at night, Alton's delight"!

Breakfast Art

As you might imagine August is a busy month at our B&B in Alton and this year it's been REALLY busy.  No complaints, we're pleased!

August might have been all too much though for one member of our team.  Recently we caught them being creative with left over fried bread, tomato ketchup and brown sauce.  Here is their breakfast art creation.

This masterpiece gave us a laugh, hope it makes you smile!

Alton Towers Free Entry Child Voucher with Birds Eye

If you're coming to stay at our B&B and plan to visit Alton Towers you might like to know about a Free Entry Child Voucher that we found on a pack of Birds Eye Peas.

Most of the money off coupons we come across for Alton Towers are 2 for 1 for adult tickets so, it's good to see something that's a bit different!

This voucher is valid until the end of the year and gives one child free entry to the theme park with a full priced adult ticket purchased at the park entrance.  As with all offers there are some restrictions (including dates over Halloween etc) so we suggest that terms and conditions are checked carefully  to avoid disappointment.

If you would like a voucher check out packs of Bird Eye Peas in your local shops OR give us a call, if we have a voucher we are always glad to pass it on to our guests!

It's been a day of two halves in Alton.  Light rain and dull skies this morning followed by a dry afternoon that ended in Spring Sunshine.  A lovely finish to the day, perfect!

Here are a couple of photos that we took in our front garden this week while we enjoyed the sun.
The first is of Grape Hyacinth (a favourite of ours) beautiful colours and a sign of Spring arriving.  The second is white heather, if you look carefully you can see a honey bee busy at work.

Enjoying The Dry Weather in Alton

After days of rain the weather has taken a turn for the better and we've been getting lots of dry, cold and sunny days in Alton.  We really enjoy the outdoors (when it's dry!) so it's been great to wrap up warm and get outside.  It's been pretty chilly here until mid morning and by mid afternoon it's started to turn cold again.  So, first thing and last thing we've been doing indoor jobs getting ready for what we hope will be a busy B&B season.  Then in the middle of the day we've spent some time outside doing jobs or sometimes just taking a walk.

These are a couple of photo's that we've taken lately.  We don't remember cutting our grass before in February.  The grass was looking a bit long, the weather was sunny and dry so we thought why not get the mower out?  So we did!

MALT TIP: Get outside, fresh air makes you feel great!
