In honour of the occasion there will be an extra bank holiday this year on Tuesday 5 June 2012 and as the late May Bank Holiday Monday has been moved to Monday 4 June 2012 this will make a VERY long weekend to look forward to! Also most schools will have their half term holidays that week.

Ben 10 Ultimate Mission opens in 2012 at Drayton Manor Theme Park. This new rollercoaster should be a hit with Ben 10 fans!

Visiting Alton? What to Pack.

Now that Spring if fast approaching we're busy getting ready to welcome guests to our B&B The Malthouse in Alton Staffordshire. If you've stayed in Alton before you'll know what to expect but if you're not familiar with the area and are coming to visit perhaps you're wondering what to pack.

We hope that the following information will help you to make your stay as comfortable as possible. Alton and the surrounding area is quite rural, we are lucky enough to live in a very picturesque village with beautiful countryside all around us. BUT if your a city dweller and miss the hustle and bustle a 30 minute car journey will take you to the heart of the city.

Visitors staying at our guest house come from all walks of life. Some guests bring a tiny amount of luggage while others pack for every eventuality and bring the kitchen sink just in case!

Here are a few things you might want to consider bringing with you:
- changes of clothes (don't forget your hat if your coming to a wedding!)
- sturdy but comfortable walking boots/training shoes
- warm coat
- waterproof clothing (we hope the weather will be fine but we can't guarantee it!)
- if the weather forecast is on the chilly side don't forget hat, scarf & gloves
- if the weather forecast is hot hot hot don't forget shorts, sunglasses & sunscreen
- swimwear & towels (if you plan to take a dip at one of the local waterparks or swimming pools)
- toiletries
- tickets/money off vouchers for attractions you plan to visit
- map (old fashioned we know but a great help if your sat nav goes haywire!)
- and finally your teddy bear!

BUT if you come without something don't worry. We usually have a plentiful supply of toiletries etc or can help point you in the direction of local shops. The most important thing is that you have a lovely break and enjoy your stay with us!

Will 2013 see a new ride at Alton Towers?

It seems that Alton Towers Theme Park are in the process of applying for planning permission for a new rollercoaster ride. If permission is granted it is thought that the new coaster would open in 2013. Great new for all you adrenaline junkies out there!

If go ahead is given the new rollercoaster would be built in the X Sector area of the Theme Park. This part of the park is very popular with visitors as the fantastic Obilvion ride is situated there. It looks as though the old Black Hole Dome would be demolished to make room for the new ride. As usual information about the new ride is being kept top secret by Alton Towers!

75 Days Until Alton Towers Opens!

Not long to go before Alton Towers Theme Park starts it's main 2012 season and we can't wait! This year the theme park opens from Saturday 24 March 2012 until Sunday 4 November 2012.

On a visit to the park last November we saw the poster below near the Nemesis ride and wondered what it was all about.

It seems that a new attraction called Nemesis Sub-Terra is due to open for the 2012 season. As Nemisis is one of our favorite rides we're really looking forward to visiting Alton Towers this year to see the attraction.

For younger visitors (and big kids!) new for 2012 is a 4D cinema experience based on the film Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. With such such cute characters this is bound to be a big hit!

If your planning a holiday or short break in the UK during 2012 Alton Towers is well worth a visit. Guests staying at our B&B often visit the theme park, we get fantastic feedback from couples, familes and groups of friends about their days out at Alton Towers. With less than two weeks to go before Christmas Day we've been busy putting up our Christmas trimmings this week. There are now plenty of decorations and lights inside and outside at The Malthouse so we're ready for the celebrations to start!

Have you done all your shopping yet? We're pretty organised but still have a few presents and last minute food items to purchase. With not many shopping days left now we'll have to get a move on!

MALT TIP: A shopping list is essential to ensure that you don't forget anything. However, take care who looks after the list when your out shopping. Sandra is famous for losing our shopping lists!

Back to Work

Holidays are great but why is it that as soon as you get home and back into your usual routine you wonder if ever had a holiday!

After dealing with a stack of post, a ton of washing and millions of e-mails we're eventually straight again BUT not for long! It's time to dust off our paint brushes, find out our cleaning materials and get down to some serious work at our B&B.

It won't be long until Christmas is here and we've got lots of jobs to fit in before it arrives so must dash!

We're Back - Hope You've Missed US!

Perhaps you wonder why you've not heard from us for a while? We've been away on ours hols BUT we're back home now. It's lovely to take a break but there's nothing quite like coming home!

Once we've unpacked our suitcases and the sorted out the mountain of washing we have it will be time to start back to work. We're hopeful that 2012 will be a busy year at our B&B in Alton, so to ensure that we're ready to open in the Spring we'll have to put our noses to the grindstone!

Fantastic Fireworks at Alton Towers!

Tonight was the first night of this years Fireworks Event at Alton Towers. What a fabulous display we were treated to, it was truly beautiful! Congratulations to Alton Towers on a spectacular first night to this much loved annual event.

As our B&B is only a short distance away from the theme park we have a lovely view of the Firework display from our house. Here are a couple of pics that we took tonight.

The colours, sound and variety of Fireworks we're truly breathtaking. We're looking forward to seeing the display all over again tomorrow night and Sunday night!

Oh what a beautiful picture! Sandra was REALLY happy to receive this latest artwork in the post a few days ago. Issie was staying at The Malthouse with her family and said she would draw a picture and send it to us. The picture is of the Runaway Mine Train at Alton Towers so we're guessing that this was Issie's favorite ride!

Cousins Together at The Malthouse B&B

Sometimes we get nice children staying with us and sometimes we get VERY nice children staying with us! These four children are cousins and the two families were here to get together because they live quite some miles apart from each other. One of the mum's was celebrating her Birthday so it made for a really happy time for everybody. Their day at Alton Towers was a great success and we hope to see them on future occasions Birthday or not!

Our Visit to Alton Towers

We were finally able to spare the time for a day out ourselves this week, at our favorite Theme Park, Alton Towers! Luckily the weather was kind and we set out from The Malthouse for a few hours of fun! We're always glad to visit the park to see what's going on and what's new. We always find time to sample the food, this year it was fish & chips followed by doughnuts - yummy!

Here we are at the start of the day - can't go past the frogs without stopping because they make us smile!

Almost halloween, the Alton Towers Scarefest starts next weekend - can't wait it looks as though it's going to be REALLY scary this year!
Scarefest runs from 15-31 October 2011.

There are renovations taking place to the conservatory. As you can see it looks as though it's going to be fabulous when work is completed. Something to look forward to for next year.

We'd just been into the haunted house 'Duel' when we came across this squirel at the side of the path. He was chattering away and looking towards the ground as though something was worrying him. We stood looking at him for sometime but couldn't see what was bothering him. Had he lost his nuts?!

Here is one of the most entertaining rides to watch. Sonic Spinball looks and sounds so much fun. You can stand really close to the ride and get almost as much of a buzz watching and listening as you do actually riding on it!

Anyway, eventually we had to come home. We had a great day, always so much to do and not always enough hours to fit everything in!

Hairdryer Blues

We receive post most days, a visit from the postman usually means more bills and junk mail but last week we received a parcel that made us laugh out loud!

We'd had a lovely family staying in room 3 at our B&B a couple of weeks ago. When they departed we cleaned the bedroom and realised that our hairdryer was missing. This has happened before (and we're sure it'll happen again!). Guests are sometimes in a rush to leave if they're heading to Alton Towers for the day and pack our hairdryer by mistake. We telephoned the family and left a message asking them to return the hairdryer if they'd got it. The Mum of the family telephoned us to say that they'd found the hairdryer and would post it back. A day or two later we were surprised to get a second telephone call, this time from Dave the Dad of the family to say he had posted the hairdryer to us. He was full of apologies and explained that he'd not seen the yellow sticker on the hairdryer saying "I live in room 3" and he'd assumed that the dryer belonged to his wife and had put it in a bag whilst trying to help her pack. We assured Dave that it wasn't a problem, thanked him for telephoning us and said we hoped to see them all again soon.

We were busy and thought no more about the hairdryer until the postman arrived with a parcel a few days later. It was the hairdryer, enclosed was a lovely note from Dave and also a sign that he suggested we might like to leave with hairdryers from now on.

What a laugh we had! It's great to see that someone else has the same sense of humour as us!

We have some lovely guests come and stay with us at The Malthouse. But just occasionally we have an extra special visitor! Back in July we had a smashing family come to spend a couple of nights with us. Now, when Sandra's gardening she loves some help and a young lady named Emma who was staying here with her Mum and Dad was pleased to assist with the gardening chores. Sandra and Emma got on famously and when she had to leave Emma said that she would send us a picture. So here it is!

Emma can be seen in the picture wearing a pretty spotted dress, Sandra is on the left of the picture and as you can see Emma noticed how tall Sandra is and what long legs she has! Also in the picture is our washing line (usually pretty full due to the vast amount of laundry we have to do). Thank you so much for such a beautiful picture it is now on proud display in our office. We shall look forward to seeing Emma and her parents again in the future.

Our visit to the Dovedale Sheepdog Trials!

Yesterday we had a rare chance to escape from work for an afternoon out - and what an afternoon it was! We took a picnic and went to watch the Sheepdog Trials at Dovedale, bliss. Although yesterday's weather forecast was not too good we're pleased to say that the sun shone all afternoon. So far the weathers been pretty nice today too. Alton often seems to get better weather than is forecast. What do those weather people know eh!

Above are a few of the snaps we took. The young sheepdog is called "Nellie", she wasn't taking part in the trials, like us she was enjoying a day out. Her owners seemed to be having a nice time too!

An afternoon at the Sheepdog Trials may not appeal to some. For us it's wonderful, all we have to do is spread out our blanket, eat our picnic and try to stay awake to watch the sheep, dogs and their handlers in action! We understand that the sheep being rounded up are "shearlings" this means that they are two years old and might lamb next spring. A variety of classes are held at the trials some are for novice handlers or young dogs and others are for experienced handlers with one or two dogs. It was all fascinating to watch and sometimes comical if the sheep wouldn't co-operate and went the wrong way!

Oh well back to work now.

Dovedale Sheepdog Trials 2011

The end of August signals one of our favorite local events. The 2011 Dovedale Sheepdog Trials take place on Tuesday 23 and Wednesday 24 August and we can hardly wait!

Sadly we were unable to go to the trials last year, it was raining heavily if I remember correctly

so we're keener than ever. We usually take a picnic and enjoy being in the countryside with lovely views and plenty to see - especially if you like dogs!

When we last went to the trials we purchased a photograph from a local artist called "pup in fleece". If you stay with us and you're in number 4 room you'll be able to see the photo on the wall.

After a busy time at our B&B during the summer an afternoon at the sheepdog trials is just what we need. It's total chill out time for us, all we have to do is spread out our picnic blanket, enjoy our lunch and then watch the dogs and sheep in action. It wouldn't be for everybody as it's not exactly an action packed day out but we love it!

A very important member of the team at The Malthouse has celebrated their 4th Birthday this week. Here's the birthday boy, our cat Smudge!

If you've been to stay at our B&B you'll more than lightly have met Smudge. He's usually relaxing in our garden or if it's breakfast time or tea time he can be found near our back door waiting for his food! I think you'll agree that Smudge looks cute but BEWARE if you catch him in a playful mood he might decide to snack on your fingers! We think that he should have been born as a dog because he follows us about outside quite often and is always keen to get into a car boot given half a chance. WATCH OUT if you visit us you could find yourself with an extra passenger to take home!

Babes in The Malthouse

Since August started we've have had lots of families with babies or toddlers visiting our B&B. What well behaved little angels they've been! A holiday with young children can be challenging, there are so many things to remember to pack!

Here at The Malthouse we do our very best to try and help families travelling with small children. Here is a list of items we are able to provide:

Travel cot, nightlight, bed/cot rail, highchair, booster seat, child's cutlery, bottle sterilising and refrigeration of milk/weaning foods.

Of course you might still have the kitchen sink to pack and you're bound to come without something! We have been known to save parents sanity by managing to come up with a soother when babies own went missing!

For those of you who read the last post on our blog you'll see that the tradition of 'love birds' choosing to stay with us continues! Love is definitely the word of the moment here at The Malthouse! Last weekend we had "regular visitors" staying with us who were celebrating their honeymoon (they got engaged here a couple of years ago) so it was particularly lovely to welcome them back again. This weekend we were delighted to learn that another couple had decided that Alton is the place to be if you want to propose to your loved one. We're pleased to say that the proposal was accepted and the happy pair are photographed below.

Friends Return to The Malthouse

Here we are in the garden. This couple have become dear family friends. It was 21 years ago when they first visited The Malthouse and stayed here with Sandra's dad who ran the B&B at that time. They were then a newly married couple visiting Alton Towers, happily they return often so that we can keep up with what's going on in their lives. Of course they have a family now, they still enjoy Alton Towers so we're delighted to see all three of them.

So, here we are, Sandra has finally managed to get some children to help her with the washing up at The Malthouse! These children came along to stay with us, armed with their own washing up gloves, tea towel and of course an apron for the youngest team member.

They came to Alton earlier this year and promised to help on their next visit. When they were here in April it was the weekend of the Royal Wedding. William & Catherine were made Baron & Baroness of Carrickfergus which is where the family come from. Knowing that Sandra is a big fan of The Royal Family they kindly brought a beautiful calendar with pictures of the happy couple with Carrickfergus Castle in the background. Thank you so much for thinking of us!

Blooming Beautiful at The Malthouse!

After a few days of rain showers the sun has arrived in Alton again! Our hanging baskets and planters at The Malthouse are particularly beautiful this year, we're delighted with them. We prepare all our own tubs growing on small plug plants that we buy early in the year. If your a keen gardener you'll know what a lot of time and effort goes into baskets and tubs. See the results of our hard work for yourself!

This year we purchased our plug plants from W Elwell Nurseries in Cheslyn Hay near Cannock, Staffordshire. They were wonderful offering all sorts of hints and tips, needless to say we'll definitely be getting our plants from them next year!

Summers Arriving at The Malthouse

The last few days have seen a distinct change to the weather in Alton, the summer seems to be arriving. We couldn't resist taking a few pics in our front garden at The Malthouse this morning as it looked so lovely!

Recently a lady staying with us asked us if needed assistance. We were puzzled to say the least! We didn't realise that our Union Jack flag was flying upside down, apparently this is a distress signal! Thanks to this very observant guest the mistake has been rectified and we're no longer in distress.

This rose and rose umbrella are the latest additions to our front garden. We're pleased with the results it looks very pretty. Hopefully it'll look a real picture in the next year or two as the rose gets established.

We're really looking forward to watching the coverage of the Royal Wedding on Friday. Mornings are a busy time at our bed & breakfast as you can imagine! However we have an action plan ready for Friday morning so that we try to watch the wedding ceremony.

We can't wait to see Kate's dress, we're sure shes going to look beautiful. If her public appearances so far are anything to go by Kate's going to make a wonderful job of being a Princess.

The fine sunny weather we've been enjoying of late seems to be going on and on! It's wonderful, we're getting lots of jobs done in the garden in between looking after guests staying with us at our B&B. Today it's been all hands on deck to get the grass cut - and boy do we have lots of grass! Oh well it beats being stuck indoors. There's blossom on most of the trees in our orchard and it looks lovely. Unfortunately though I don't think it'll last for long as there's been a light breeze blowing this afternoon.

Easter is a lovely time of year. The trees and plants in our garden at The Malthouse are coming back to life after the winter. There are lambs in the fields across the valley from us and birds are busy building nests in our orchard. This all seems very appropriate for Easter I think.

We can't believe just how wonderful the weather is in Alton at the moment. Guests staying at our B&B this week have been dressed in shorts, t-shirts & sunglasses and it's only April!

MALT TIP: If your heading to stay with us and the weather is fine don't forget to bring sunscreen, hats and sunglasses etc.

We had two very sensible ladies staying with us recently who had come prepared for any eventuality. They had packed shorts, t-shirts & flip flops in case of a heatwave, rain coats & wellington boots in case of a storm and warm winter sweaters & ski jackets in case it turned cold again. These are the sort of guests we love to have stay with us, they were ready for any type of weather and determined that whatever happened it wouldn't spoil their fun at Alton Towers!

Sunshine at The Malthouse B&B

The weather in Alton was fantastic yesterday - we're hoping it continues! It was wonderful to see the sun all day and everywhere looking so beautiful. I couldn't resist taking a few snaps in our garden at The Malthouse B&B and thought you'd like to take a look. These Grape Hyacinth are one of our favourite flowers, they're dotted all along the boarder at the front of the house and look a picture at this time of year.

We were all busy yesterday mowing grass and tidying up outside but not everyone at our B&B was working!

Here's our cat Smudge doing what he does best 'just chilling'!

We're hoping that the weather stays calm for a few days so that we can enjoy looking at the blossom on this tree.

After the harsh Winter weather we're crossing our fingers for a lovely Spring and Summer. If yesterday's anything to go by I think we're in luck!

Busy Week at The Malthouse B&B

It's been all go at our B&B this week, Alton Towers opens on Saturday so we've been busy to say the least! For the last couple of weeks the weather in Alton has been just lovely. So, this week as most of our indoor preparations for guests arriving are complete we've been busy working outside. Here are a few pics to show you what we've been up to.

This small outbuilding located at the side of the main house is a Victorian toilet. It's a two seater - great if you want to chat! Major repair work was needed to the roof of this building so Owen & Ian have been kept busy.

Here are the plug plants that we've recently purchased. We'll grow them on now until they're ready to plant in our tubs and hanging baskets.

We've replaced the old wooden fencing & hand rail near our outdoor family area with this smart new metalwork. A great improvement!

A big thank you to TouristNetUK who came to our rescue (yet again!) at the weekend.
We advertise our B&B, The Malthouse in Alton Staffordshire with TouristNetUK. They also look after our website and give us general help and advice when we need it.

This weekend we discovered that we not receiving all the emails that were being sent to us. Thanks to advice from Malcolm at TouristNetUK we were quickly able to track down the problem. It turned out that our provider BT was having technical difficulties and this was causing some of our emails to go missing. We're glad to say that the situation was soon resolved and we're now receiving all our emails again!

Visiting The Malthouse & Want to Walk?

Many of our B&B guests are surprised to find that Alton (the village we're located in) is such a beautiful rural village. If your coming to stay with us at The Malthouse B&B and like walking don't forget to consider bringing your walking boots or just a pair of old training shoes with you!

Alton is a lovely village to stroll around but for the more adventurous there are plenty of walks nearby in fabulous countryside. We came across a four mile long walk called Furnace Forest recently on the Internet. There is a leaflet produced by our local council Staffordshire Moorland District Council that gives a map and directions for the walk. See www.staffsmoorlands.gov.uk/downloads/Furnace_Forest_SMDC_2_.pdf to view the Furnace Forest walk. The walk starts and finishes at the Ramblers Reteat(cafe/restaurant) in Dimmingdale just 1 mile from The Malthouse. You might like to stop at the Ramblers Retreat for tea & cake or a meal! Perhaps you should eat before you start walking so that you can walk off all the calories!

Back to Work

Now that the Christmas and New Year holidays are over it's back to work at The Malthouse B&B! During the holidays we took a few days off from decorating and cleaning but on Monday we started back to work. We plan to be open and ready to receive guests at the end of March when Alton Towers opens for it's main 2011 season. Before we open our doors this year there's lots to do at our bed and breakfast in Alton. If it doesn't move it's being painted, washed, cleaned or polished. Our cat Smudge keeps on moving in case we clean him!

Like most of the country we've had our fair share of snow here in Staffordshire this winter. Here's a lovely winter picture of The Malthouse taken from our front lawn.

It's Snowing Again!

Alton looks just beautiful again this morning with very festive weather. We watched the weather forecast yesterday and thought the snow might miss us - how wrong we were. We woke up this morning to a sprinkle of snow on the ground and plenty more snow coming down! Looks like we might be in for a white Christmas if the snow continues this week.

Even the statues in our garden at The Malthouse are trying to shelter from the snow! Thank goodness we're not expecting any guests to arrive at our B&B today. I don't think they'd get here! The snow is not too deep at the moment but it will be by the end of the day if the snow continues to fall all day.

Christmas at The Malthouse

This year were very organised (for a change) at The Malthouse and can't wait for Christmas to come. All our presents have been purchased and hopefully if we're very good Santa will deliver them to us! We've even found time to do most of our food shopping too - other than a few last minute bits and pieces.

Even our cat Smudge is getting ready for Christmas. Here he is in his Santa hat - aah very cute!

I'm sure Santa will leave a present or two for Smudge if he's a good boy.

The Malthouse is decorated inside and out (as you can see) so we're all set for the big day to arrive!

The only downside to being so organised and ready for Christmas by mid December is that we might have time to do a bit more decorating before the celebrations start. Boo!!!!

Oh well I guess we have to make the most of any spare time we have. Once the New Year starts it won't be long until Alton Towers opens for it's 2011 season. Yeah!!!!

Alton where we live is looking very festive. Most houses in the village are decorated with lights, it looks lovely at night.

Brrr It's Still Very Cold in Alton!

It hasn't snowed in Alton for a few days now but boy is it cold! The central heating systems here at The Malthouse are being tested to their limits! We don't remember it being this cold for this long for years. We don't think we've seen the daytime temperature rise above -2 for over 10 days and most nights the temperature seems to fall to -10 or even lower. Bring on the Spring!

Winter has Arrived at The Malthouse!

Like most parts of the country it's been snowing in Alton today. It's pretty chilly at The Malthouse but not as cold as it was over the weekend thankfully. It was -10 at 10am on Sunday morning - the -1 we have experienced today is very welcome!

We have been decorating inside The Stables today. For those of you who have stayed with us for Bed & Breakfast in the past perhaps you will recognise this building beside our car park. Very festive I think you'll agree!

Our pond is frozen over as you can see (or not as the case maybe!) but we have been down to check on the fish and all is well thanks to a kettle of hot water. Hanging on the pergola are some bird feeders and we've filled them to the brim so that our feathered friends won't suffer during the cold spell.

If you're feeling the cold we can recommend decorating to keep you warm!

READY FOR ANOTHER HOLIDAY!

Already exhausted from gardening AGAIN because it was a lovely sunny day here today! Too nice to be indoors (where we should be decorating!) so we decided to clear up the windfalls from under the apple trees in The Malthouse orchard and do a bit of general tidying up outside.

We have been selling apples to raise money for the County Air Ambulance and Local First Responders who are vital to us as Alton is in such a rural location. We have also been making apple pies -and eating them yum yum!

All our fruit trees look a bit sad at this time of year but the Autumn was very colourful, better than ever. Here is a picture of one of our apple trees taken this summer when they looked at their very best.

As we're not so busy doing B&B at this time of year we've had time to catch up with a few neighbours and friends at our local pub. We were all chatting about the excellent firework display at Alton Towers during early November. It appears that it was very popular and is sure to be repeated in 2011.

Anyway must go now we are BIG fans of Strictly Come Dancing and have an episode or two that we recorded to catch up on.

You won't have heard from us for a few days because we've been away ourselves for a holiday!
Back to work now after a well deserved break from doing bed and breakfast for others! But really we love being at The Malthouse. Alton is a lovely place to live at any time of the year and we're glad to be home.
There are quite a few things to do in our guest bedrooms before the start of the new season at Alton Towers comes around. March 2011 will once again see us welcoming visitors who are going to the theme park and who need somewhere close by to relax after a busy day out.
Must dash, many jobs to do and only a few weeks to get the decorating done!
